The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is actively searching for the driver of a vehicle reportedly involved in a fatal hit-and-run accident on Highway 1 near Monterey. The incident occurred around 9:48 a.m. on Sunday when a silver Nissan allegedly collided with a black Honda traveling northbound on Highway 1, just beyond Aguajito Road.
According to CHP, the impact caused the Honda to lose control, veer off the road, and crash into a tree. The driver of the Honda, later identified as 19-year-old Maddie Elizabeth Fletcher from Shelby, North Carolina, was pronounced dead at the scene by Monterey County authorities. CHP reported that the Nissan continued driving north after the collision.
The investigation is ongoing, and CHP is working to determine if drugs or alcohol may have contributed to the crash. Charges for the Nissan’s driver could vary depending on the findings.
