Duluth Authorities Identify Five Killed In Apparent Murder-Suicide, Including Two Children
In a heartbreaking incident, authorities have identified five Duluth residents, including a 7-year-old child and a teenager, who were found dead Thursday in what police are calling an apparent murder-suicide.
The Duluth Police Department confirmed that 46-year-old Anthony Nephew is suspected of taking his own life after allegedly killing four family members across two separate residences.
Officers were first dispatched to the 6000 block of Tacony Street around 2:10 p.m. on Thursday for a welfare check. There, they found 47-year-old Erin Abramson and 15-year-old Jacob Nephew dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Shortly afterward, officers proceeded to another location connected to the case: the suspect’s home in the 4400 block of West 6th Street.
At this second residence, police discovered the bodies of 45-year-old Kathryn Nephew and 7-year-old Oliver Nephew, both also dead from gunshot wounds. Nearby, Anthony Nephew was found deceased, with what authorities describe as a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The Duluth Police Department extended its condolences to the families, friends, and community affected by the tragedy. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims’ families, friends, and loved ones involved in this tragic event,” the department said in a statement, emphasizing that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The police noted that all victims were known to one another.
This devastating incident has left the Duluth community in shock. Police have confirmed that the investigation is ongoing, as detectives work to gather more information about the circumstances leading up to the killings. Authorities have not yet released details on a possible motive or any prior incidents involving the family.
A press conference is scheduled for noon on Friday, where officials are expected to share additional information regarding the tragedy. The Duluth Police Department has urged anyone struggling with mental health issues or who may be aware of individuals in crisis to seek help and support.
This case has highlighted concerns surrounding domestic violence and mental health, with community members expressing deep sorrow and looking for ways to support each other in the wake of the loss.
