Albany State University in Georgia saw a mass shooting on Saturday night over homecoming weekend, leaving one person dead and five others injured, according to school officials.

Authorities in Mississippi reported earlier Saturday that at least two individuals opened fire on a group of several hundred people celebrating a high school football team’s victory in the homecoming game at an outdoor trail near Lexington, Mississippi, killing three and wounding eight.

According to reports, Lawrence M. Drake II, the acting president of Albany State University, stated that the shootings took place on the east campus of the university. According to him, the case is under the jurisdiction of Georgia’s state bureau of investigation (GBI).

Drake stated in a statement on Sunday that “as always, the safety and security of our ASU students, faculty, and staff are the number one priority of this institution.”

A 19-year-old Atlanta male passed away at Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital in Albany, according to Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler, De-Morion Tayshawn Daniels was identified as the deceased victim.

There are roughly 6,000 students enrolled at Albany State.

Over 420 mass shootings have occurred in the US so far this year, as of Sunday morning.

According to the neutral archive, a mass shooting occurs when four or more people are killed or injured.

Although Congress has mostly been unable or unwilling to enact such restrictions, some Americans have called for more significant federal gun control due to the US’s yearly high frequency of mass shootings.
