The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office has identified the victims as 42-year-old Nathan Omel, who was driving the pickup truck, and his 66-year-old mother, Cynthia Omel, who was seated in the rear. Both tragically lost their lives at the scene of the collision on Monday.
The accident occurred when a southbound semi-truck collided with the northbound pickup truck carrying the Omel family. Marion Omel, a 95-year-old family member who was sitting in the front seat of the pickup, sustained critical injuries in the collision. He was quickly transported to CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island, where he remains under intensive medical care.
The semi-truck, operated by a 34-year-old man from Kearney, was also involved in the collision. Fortunately, the driver of the semi was not injured in the crash.
