Gerry Faust Death Dayton, Ohio: American High School And College Football Coach Dies At 89
Gerry Faust, the legendary high school and college football coach, passed away on November 11, 2024, at the age of 89. Known for his passion for football and dedication to his players, Faust leaves behind a legacy defined by his years of leadership, especially in the realms of high school and college sports. Born on May 21, 1935, Gerard Anthony Faust grew up with a deep love for football, eventually playing quarterback at the University of Dayton.
Under the guidance of former Notre Dame coach Hugh Devore, Faust excelled, though he chose Dayton over Notre Dame, which had offered him a partial scholarship. After graduating in 1958, Faust began a remarkable coaching career that would see him rise from high school football’s elite ranks to one of college football’s most prestigious coaching jobs. Faust’s coaching career began in earnest at Moeller High School in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1962.
Over nearly two decades, he led Moeller to national prominence, compiling a record of 178–23–2 and securing four High School Football National Championships. His success at Moeller, where he was known for instilling discipline, sportsmanship, and a strong work ethic, made him a local hero and a prominent figure in Ohio football. In 1981, Faust made the leap to college football, becoming the head coach at the University of Notre Dame, a position he held until 1985.
While his tenure there was mixed, with a college record of 30-26-1, his enthusiasm and dedication to the game endeared him to many fans and players alike. In 1986, he went on to coach at the University of Akron, where he stayed until 1994, concluding his collegiate career with an overall record of 73–79–4.
Faust’s impact extended far beyond his win-loss record. He was admired for his genuine commitment to his players’ development both on and off the field, mentoring countless young athletes.
Faust’s coaching philosophy was rooted in his Catholic faith and dedication to character-building, values he emphasized throughout his career. His enduring influence was honored earlier this year when he was inducted into the National High School Football Hall of Fame on June 8, 2024.
Gerry Faust’s contributions to football, particularly in Ohio, have left a lasting impact, and his legacy will continue through the many players, coaches, and fans he inspired over the decades.
