Tony Todd Obituary-Death News; Beloved horror icon Tony Todd has passed away
Prolific actor Tony Todd, especially popular with horror fans for his roles in the genre, passed away on Nov. 6 at his Los Angeles Home. Per Deadline, Todd’s death was confirmed by his reps, but the cause of death is not yet known. He was 69 years old.
Todd was born on Dec. 4, 1954. After studying theater at the Eugene O’Neil National Actors Theatre Institute, he began appearing in movies and TV shows by the mid-1980s.
One of his very first roles was in Oliver Stone’s acclaimed 1986 war film Platoon alongside Charlie Sheen, Johnny Depp, and Willem Dafoe. The film won Best Picture at the Academy Awards, among other Oscars, helping to further launch Todd’s career.
In 1990, Todd took on one of his most recognizable horror roles by starring as Ben in Tom Savini’s remake of George A. Romero’s zombie movie Night of the Living Dead. He’d follow this up with his role as the titular horror icon in 1992’s Candyman, a film that spawned a movie series with several sequels.
Todd would return for 1995’s Candyman: Farewell to the flesh and 1999’s Candyman: Day of the Dead. He’d revisit the franchise once again more recently in 2021 with an appearance in Nia DaCosta’s Candyman movie.
Todd is also known for his key role in the Final Destination franchise. He had been appearing in Final Destination films since the 2000 original as the mysterious character William Bludworth.
It was previously reported that Todd would return to the franchise in the upcoming film Final Destination: Bloodlines, which is expected to be released in 2025. Filming was wrapped earlier this year and Todd will likely have a posthumous appearance in the film.
Additionally, Todd appeared in The Crow as well as several Hatchet franchise films in the role of Reverend Zombie. His other many films in the genre include Voodoo Dawn, Wishmaster, The Graves, Frankenstein, Death House, Hell Fest, Candy Corn, Tales from the Hood 3, and Hellblazers. He recently appeared in the horror movies The Bunker and Stream. The actor also did voiceover work for Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen and Justice League vs. Bizarro League.
On the small screen, Todd memorably played Worf’s brother, Kurn, in Star Trek: The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine. For the latter, he also portrayed an older version of Jake Sisko in one episode, and he had a separate role as an Alpha Hirogen in Star Trek: Voyager. He would reprise his role of Rodek (formerly Kurn) by voicing the character in the computer game Star Trek Online.
Todd also voiced the disguised voice of Teddy Sears’ Zoom in The Flash television series, with his other TV credits including Matlock, Law & Order, The X-Files, Murder, She Wrote, Smallville, Charmed, 24, Young Justice, Dead Summer, The Orville, Scream: Resurrection, Masters of the Universe: Revelation, and Dota: Dragon’s Blood.
Just recently, Todd did voiceover work for the video game Indiana Jones and the Great Circle. He’d also recently voiced Venom for 2023’s Spider-Man 2 game. For his role as Venom, Todd was nominated for a voice acting award at the British Academy Game Awards.
