The Houston Fire Department (HFD) and the Greater Houston community are mourning the loss of Firefighter Marcelo Garcia, 42, who died while battling a devastating three-alarm warehouse fire on Wednesday night in Houston’s Greater East End.
Garcia, a 10-year veteran based at Station 23, tragically lost his life when a wall collapsed amid the intense fire, underscoring the immense dangers faced by first responders.
The blaze broke out just before 11 p.m. at a warehouse on Supply Row, close to Polk Street and west of Highway 90. Firefighters arrived to find the flames spreading quickly, prompting a second alarm at 11:04 p.m.
As the fire intensified and structural integrity worsened, a mayday alert was issued when the wall collapse occurred. This escalation led to a third alarm, and additional resources were dispatched.
Garcia, along with another firefighter who sustained injuries but is expected to recover, was quickly transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital in the Texas Medical Center.
Tragically, despite efforts, Garcia succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind a legacy of courage and dedication. HFD Chief Thomas Muñoz expressed the department’s grief, emphasizing the support being provided to the affected firefighters and Garcia’s family.
“We ask the City of Houston to keep the Garcia family and the Houston Fire Department in your prayers as we mourn our brother,” said Chief Muñoz in a heartfelt statement.
Houston Mayor John Whitmire echoed the sorrow felt across the city, acknowledging the significant loss to both Garcia’s family and the entire Houston community.
“This is the hardest part of my role as mayor of this great city – to respond to a tragedy involving one of our first responders, one of our heroes,” Whitmire stated. “On behalf of the citizens of Houston, I offer my deepest condolences to the Garcia family.”
In the aftermath, Critical Incident Stress Management teams have been activated to provide emotional support to Garcia’s fellow firefighters and his family. His bravery in the line of duty will be remembered by the department and the city he dedicated his life to protect.
