Darion C. McMillian Obituary-Death News; Suspect Faces Multiple Charges After Fatal Shooting Of Chicago Officer
On Wednesday afternoon, the Chicago Police Department charged Darion C. McMillian, age 23, with the tragic shooting of Officer Enrique Martinez on the South Side of Chicago.
McMillian now faces a long list of charges, including first-degree murder of a police officer, first-degree murder, attempted murder of a police officer, residential burglary, unlawful use of a weapon with a machine gun, and aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
This high-profile case has underscored deepening concerns over repeat offenders and gun violence in Chicago, while adding another chapter to the ongoing struggle to curb violence in the city’s neighborhoods.
The incident began on Monday evening, around 8 p.m., near the 8000 block of South Ingleside Avenue in the East Chatham neighborhood. Officer Martinez, just 26 years old, was patrolling the area with his partner when they noticed a vehicle obstructing traffic.
As they approached the car, they observed three occupants, including McMillian. At this point, additional officers arrived on the scene as backup. According to reports, McMillian appeared to reach for a bag on the floor of the vehicle, ignoring police commands to stop.
In the moments that followed, McMillian allegedly pulled out a fully automatic firearm and fired directly at the officers, fatally wounding Officer Martinez.
Tragically, the gunfire claimed another life that night: the vehicle’s driver, who was struck and killed in the hail of bullets. Authorities have yet to disclose the driver’s identity, but witnesses report that McMillian quickly pushed the driver’s body from the car, slid into the driver’s seat, and attempted to flee.
During this escape attempt, McMillian reversed the car, reportedly dragging one of the officers along with it. That officer managed to fire a shot into the ground as McMillian drove away, and while initially in serious condition, was later reported to be in fair condition at the hospital.
Another individual present in the vehicle was taken into custody shortly after the incident but was ultimately released without charges, as authorities did not find sufficient evidence linking him to the crimes.
As investigations continue, officials have turned their attention to McMillian’s criminal background, revealing a history of arrests and charges across Illinois. In January 2023, McMillian was indicted by a Will County grand jury for unlawful cannabis possession with intent to distribute. More recently, in October, he faced additional charges for tampering with a drug screening test. At the time of the shooting, he was on electronic monitoring, a reminder of his ongoing entanglements with the legal system.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling expressed frustration and grief at a press conference following McMillian’s arrest. “We have to do everything we can to keep violent offenders off the street, especially those who are repeating these acts,” he stated. “If we don’t do that, then we’re failing our citizens, our children, and their futures.
” Snelling’s remarks echoed a broader sentiment in Chicago, where citizens and officials alike have called for stricter measures to prevent violent repeat offenders from roaming the city’s streets.
McMillian’s escape attempt took another turn as he collided with a parked vehicle nearby. Abandoning the car, he reportedly fled on foot, forcing his way into a nearby apartment where a woman was present.
While she was unharmed, McMillian allegedly grabbed a knife and cut off his electronic monitoring device, attempting to conceal himself within the residence. Police located and apprehended him a short time later in the 8000 block of South Maryland Avenue.
