The Smith County Sheriff’s Office reported that deputies responded to a domestic disturbance around 12:45 p.m. after Layton allegedly made threatening remarks following his termination from a local business.
According to Sheriff Larry Smith, deputies were called to Layton’s home on County Road 4109 after his former employer reported that he was heading home to retrieve something after making threats to “take care of the situation.
” Upon arrival at approximately 1:08 p.m., two deputies entered the residence and encountered Layton in a hallway. Sheriff Smith explained that Layton turned toward the deputies holding a pistol, prompting one of the officers to fire three shots in self-defense.
Emergency responders rushed Layton to a nearby hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
