Ruth Sue Ann Robison Death News; Des Moines Woman Killed While Helping Daughter Move, Ex-Boyfriend Charged With Murder
A tragic incident unfolded Friday evening on Des Moines’ north side, where a mother was fatally shot, and her husband critically injured, while assisting their daughter in moving out of her ex-boyfriend’s home. Authorities have identified the deceased as 45-year-old Ruth Sue Ann Robison from Urbandale.
Deputies from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting call around 5:21 p.m. at a residence on the 200 block of Northwest 51st Place. Upon arrival, they discovered Robison and her 52-year-old husband with gunshot wounds.
Both were immediately transported to nearby hospitals, where Robison succumbed to her injuries. Her husband remains in critical condition as of Monday morning, according to the sheriff’s office.
The alleged shooter, identified as 24-year-old Hamza Smajlovic of West Des Moines, has been charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder, and intimidation with a dangerous weapon. Authorities detained Smajlovic at the scene shortly after the incident occurred. According to a criminal complaint, Smajlovic reportedly shot Robison in the head with a 9mm pistol, also injuring her husband in the same manner.
The shooting reportedly took place in Smajlovic’s own residence, where his ex-girlfriend, the Robisons’ daughter, had been living. After recently ending her relationship with Smajlovic, she had returned to retrieve her belongings with her parents’ assistance. It was during this process that the situation escalated into violence.
The criminal complaint further alleges that Smajlovic not only attacked Robison and her husband but also discharged a live round toward his ex-girlfriend in an occupied residence, compounding the charges against him.
The incident is being investigated as a domestic violence case, with authorities confirming that Smajlovic’s actions were targeted at his ex-girlfriend and her family.
Smajlovic is currently being held in the Polk County Jail with a $750,000 cash-only bond, awaiting his next court appearance. A no-contact order has been issued to protect his ex-girlfriend as the investigation continues.
